Walk between towering dunes, across dry riverbeds and rocky plateaus, as you follow a route from Mhamid El Ghizlane through Erg Zahar to the spectacular dunes of Erg Chegaga—some of the highest in Morocco.
This Erg Chegaga trek blends physical challenge, cultural discovery, and awe-inspiring landscapes. You’ll meet local nomadic herders, explore untouched desert wilderness, and enjoy panoramic views from the dunes. The trek offers a sustainable and immersive way to explore southern Morocco, far from the busy tourist routes of Merzouga and Zagora.
Day 1: Scenic transfer to Mhamid El Ghizlane, passing through the High Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou, and the Drâa Valley. Overnight in a comfortable fixed desert camp with electricity, showers, and traditional hammam.
Day 2: Begin the desert hike toward Erg Sidi Naji, an area of cultural and spiritual importance. Sleep in a mobile bivouac surrounded by sand dunes under a clear Saharan sky.
Day 3: Continue across desert plains toward the remote and stunning Erg Zahar, known for its "singing dunes." Enjoy sunset over the Sahara and overnight in a nomadic camp.
Day 4: Trek to Erg Smar and Erg Sadra, crossing dry riverbeds and desert landscapes. Break near a desert well and possibly meet nomadic families with camels and goats. Camp in a remote, peaceful dune setting.
Day 5: Reach the dramatic dunes of Erg Chegaga, the highest in southern Morocco. Climb the tallest dune for views across the Sahara and Bani Mountains. Final night camping in the desert—choose a tent or sleep under the stars.
Day 6: Return by 4x4 across the sacred oasis and desert hamadas to Mhamid. After lunch, transfer back toward central Morocco. Optional overnight stay or onward travel available on request.
Includes: all meals, camel support for gear, bottled or filtered water, private guides, camping gear, and accommodation in desert camps. Vegetarian meals available.
The trek starts and ends in Mhamid El Ghizlane. The first night is in a fixed camp with full amenities; the rest are in traditional nomadic tents or under the stars. The route is rated moderate (4–5 hours of walking daily), and suitable for active travelers. Our eco-conscious approach supports local communities and minimizes environmental impact.
